The Great Enchanter Sherpadecke
This is an illustration of the Great Enchanter, from A csudafa (The Wonder Tree), published in Budapest in 1924.
This scene appears in A csudafa (The Wonder Tree), first published in Budapest in 1924. Written by Elek Benedek, often called the great preserver of Hungarian folk tales, the collection brings together stories shaped by oral tradition, rural life, and a deep sense of moral imagination. Though intended for children, the tales resonate across generations through their gentle wisdom, playful magic, and enduring belief in cleverness and compassion.
The illustration is the work of Álmos Jaschik (1885–1950), whose decorative style and sensitivity to atmosphere made him a natural interpreter of fairy tales. Influenced by Art Nouveau, Jaschik infused his illustrations with lyrical movement and symbolic detail. As an artist and influential teacher in Budapest, he helped shape Hungarian visual culture while creating imagery that continues to enchant modern audiences.
