OASIS (Orangutan Advocates for Safety in Sumatra) is a grass-roots organization founded by orangutan advocates in the United States, and on-the-ground orangutan advocates in Sumatra who are actively involved in wildlife conservation as well as the protection of endangered species and environments. Our goal is to purchase land in Sumatra between the rainforests and villages, replant them with proper trees for habitat and food, and in the meantime, to feed the orangutans in these safe havens (or, 'oasis') while the growth is maturing. These volunteers will also serve in providing security for these orangutans. The volunteers will also work with villagers in educating them, and earning their trust so that the villagers will contact the volunteers for assistance, instead of killing the orangutans. The volunteers are native to the country, and know the locale and people. The seed money will be used to purchase the initial 'oasis' of land, some seedlings and supplies, and to help us with the formation of a much larger organization so that we can educate as many people as possible, and help orangutans thrive in their native homeland.
