Askia Muhammmad (1443-1538) was one of the greatest rulers in African History and the architect of the Songhai Empire at it's height. Rising to power in 1493 after overthrowing Sunni Ali's successor, he transformed Songhai into the largest and most powerful empire in West Africa. A devout muslim and a disciplined statesman, Askia reorganized the empire with a structured system to oversee finance, justice, agriculture and the military. His rule brought stability, prosperity and administrative sophistication rarely seen in the region at the time. He strengthened Islam across the empire, supporting scholars and expanding centers of learning such as Timbuktu, which became a beacon of knowledge in the Muslim world. Under his leadership, Songhai controlled vast trans-Saharan trade routes, dealing in gold, salt and goods that connected West Africa to the wider world. He ruled for decades until he was deposed by his own son in 1528, spending his final years in exile. Despite this, his legacy endured as a model of leadership, scholarship and Imperial strength. He is remembered as one of Africa's greatest emperors.
