Make your next family gathering, vacation or trip a fun opportunity to break the cycle of dysfunctional family behavior. A VALIDATION VACATION! You can’t make them get therapy but you can set good boundaries in a creative, fun and non-threatening way. Teach them how to treat you and each other by customizing PINKY’S RULES. Is your family passive-aggressive? Do you have a bully? Is there someone who has to critique absolutely everything? A one-upper? Set the boundaries you need and set a good example for future generations. Your gathering doesn’t need to be and shouldn’t be a group therapy session, these are just light-hearted, fun ground rules for being around each other. Let the focus be food, games and everybody feeling included. PINKY is just here as a fun way to remember that this is an experiment in doing things differently, in promoting acceptance and kindness. No one needs to be punished for breaking the rules — just gently get back on track with the fun! A few more ideas: Turn the typical family reunion games on their head by making all the games COOPERATIVE instead of competitive. Instead of giving out awards for “Most likely to be late” give out positive awards to anyone who deserves it, not just one person. Do you have 3 funny people in your group? Give out 3 awards — family is not a competitive and comparison is the thief of joy. Take a little emotional risk and try to be the light you needed as a child. Break the cycle of generational trauma.
