Carnival, celebrated in many countries, is full of mischief and fun. It is a time of abandon and merriment which precedes the Lenten period, a symbolic Christian penitence of 40 days commencing on Ash Wednesday and ending at Easter. Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday) is the final day of Carnival. During this time, participants indulge in voluntary madness by donning masks and generally giving themselves up to the god and goddess of indulgences, Bacchus and Venus.
