Lunar Eclipse of the Century

The longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century occurs on July 27, 2018. The moon passes through the center of the Earth’s umbra or shadow, called a central lunar eclipse. It also occurs when the Moon is farthest from the Earth or at the apogee portion of its orbit. That means that the Moon will be in total eclipse for about 103 minutes, giving a spectacular display for viewers in Eastern Africa and Central Asia, and impressive viewing in South America, Western Africa, Europe, Eastern Asia and Australia.
